Lanterns Season 1 brings the iconic Green Lantern universe from DC Comics to life in a dark and atmospheric crime/mystery series from HBO and DC Studios. Starring Kyle Chandler and Aaron Pierre, the series combines classic superhero mythology with a grounded crime story that draws parallels to the tone of acclaimed drama series like True Detective.

The story follows experienced Green Lantern Hal Jordan (Kyle Chandler) and young recruit John Stewart (Aaron Pierre), both members of the Green Lantern Corps – an intergalactic police force whose members possess extraordinary powers through their mysterious rings. The two have vastly different approaches to their work but are forced to collaborate when a violent crime in a small American town points to something far more disturbing than ordinary criminal activity.

The investigation leads them to Rushville, Nebraska, where a series of mysterious events and local secrets gradually reveal connections to forces far beyond Earth's borders. While Hal tries to maintain his authority and experience, John begins to question both his mentor's methods and the responsibility that comes with being a Green Lantern. Their strained relationship becomes a central part of a story about power, loyalty, and the personal costs of being a hero.

Behind the series are Chris Mundy (Ozark), Damon Lindelof (Watchmen, The Leftovers), and acclaimed DC comic book writer Tom King. With its eight episodes, the first season stands out from traditional superhero stories by prioritizing character development, suspense, and a pervasive crime mystery over constant action. The cast also features Danish actor Ulrich Thomsen as Thaal Sinestro, one of the most well-known figures in the Green Lantern universe.

The series has received an extremely positive reception from both critics and audiences, who have praised it for daring to stand out from familiar superhero formulas.
