The story of Steve Vai and Joe Satriani's collaboration began back in 1973, when the then 13-year-old Steve Vai started taking guitar lessons from Joe Satriani, who was just four years his senior, on Long Island in New York. Since then, both have built legendary solo careers and shared the stage numerous times, including on the famous G3 tours. But only now have they truly united their creative forces on a full album of new material.

On The Sea of Emotion, Satriani's melodic sense and Vai's experimental and expressive guitar playing meet in a dynamic interplay, where the two musicians alternately challenge each other with virtuoso solos and build up detailed harmonies. The album ranges from the raw rock energy on "Mayhem" and "Bronco Freight Train" to the darker, cinematic moods on "Old Sins Have Long Shadows" and the grand "I Wanna Play My Guitar," which features legendary rock vocalist Glenn Hughes as a guest singer.

The album's musical and emotional center is the three-part title suite "The Sea of Emotion." The final part even contains an original tape recording from one of Vai's early guitar lessons with Satriani, thereby forging a direct connection between the two musicians' youth and their shared musical achievement more than half a century later.
