Probiotics or health-beneficial bacteria have only recently been introduced in dentistry and oral medicine after years of successful use in mainly gastro-intestinal disorders. Probiotics may control dental caries in children due to their inhibitory action against cariogenic streptococci. Probiotic play very important and beneficial role in oral cavity. Lactobacilli and Bifidobacteria have been reported as promising bacteria for prevention of Dental caries. Probiotic organism used in Periodontal therapy are Lactobacillus, Bifidobacterium species and Streptococcus species. Streptococcus salivarius produce bacteriocins which could contribute to reducing the number of bacteria that produce Volatile sulphur compounds which helps in prevention of Halitosis. Probiotic cheese containing L rhamnosus strains decreases the number of high yeast count and prevent oral infection. Probiotic also have effects on Mouth ulcer and Dental implants. Furthermore the best vehicles for oral probiotic applications need to be assessed. However, scientific evidence so far indicates that probiotic therapy may be a reality in dentistry and oral medicine in near future.
